You will meet your private transportation on the pier and set off through the town of Messina for Taormina. The drive along the coast is approximately 50 - 60 minutes. In Taormina, you will have approximately three hours to explore this charming hillside town and its surroundings on your own.
Certainly a must see on any visit to Taormina is the scenario of the theater with the panoramic view behind it of Mt. Etna and the sea. The Piazza Vittorio Emanuele is a popular meeting place. Here stands Palazzo Corvaja which was the seat of the first Sicilian parliament in 1411.
At the west end of the town you can find the post office and the Palazzo dei Duchi di Santo Stefano which now houses the Giuseppe Mazzullo Foundation. Here you will find a permanent exhibition of the works of this Sicilian sculptor. The Cathedral, the Convento di San Domenico, The Villa Comunale (Town Gardens) are near here as well. Those willing to make the climb may want to explore the mediaeval quarter of the Borgo. Here you would find the town library in the former Chiesa di Sant' Agostino, the Badia Vecchia (Old Abbey) a Norman fortification. Even further up the hill is the village of Castelmola and Taormina Castle.
At the designated time, you will meet your private transportation for the drive back to Messina and the pier. Please note: As this is private exploration in Taormina, there are no admissions or refreshments included in the tour price. Your driver is not licensed as a guide. Most drivers know some English as a second language and their level of English will vary. This is a transfer only.
