Skansen's Open Air Museum and Zoo
Founded in 1891, Skansen is the world's only open-air museum with a zoo full of rare animals to delight every visitor. More than 150 historical buildings dwellings throughout the country were dismantled and reassembled here to showcase a real sense of Sweden's past, complete with characters in periodic dress. Walk by the many displays as your guide introduces you to Sweden's history, culture, customs, and traditions. You will also discover how the Swedes once lived, worked, and celebrated according to the seasons.
Depending on when you visit you might enjoy one of Skansen's Midsummer, Walpurgis Night, or Lucia celebrations. The summertime provides lively singing, dancing, and concerts while the wintertime treats you to its famous Christmas Market and dancing around the Christmas tree. Be sure to spend some time at the onsite zoo with its bears, wolves, lynx, and reindeer, as well as pets, rare breeds, and exotics.
