San Gimignano Tour by Private Driver
On this Livorno excursion, design your own itinerary and spend a full day seeing exactly what you want to see in the Tuscan towns of San Gimignano and Siena. With the guidance of a knowledgeable driver in your own private sedan tour, you're sure to get the most out of your time in Tuscany.
The skyline of the UNESCO World Heritage site of San Gimignano is an eye-catching one. The town is a terra cotta cap on a lush, treed hill, with 14 high towers inside the walled city stretching high into the sky. While the city once boasted 72 of these incredible towers, what is left of the medieval architecture still stand as a fairy tale glimpse into the past.
Views from the towers above take in the earthy stones of the buildings and the lush patchwork of green fields and forests. Romanesque and Gothic architecture line the twisted streets, with arched doorways and windows, and stone houses and churches that make many a pretty picture.
On the road to Siena you will make a stop at a trattoria, where you can purchase some of the local delicacies, like dishes made with fragrant saffron or a local white wine called Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
The medieval architecture continues in Siena, with curved streets packed with ruddy brick buildings. The marble top of the Torre del Mangia, the soaring tower in the Piazza del Campo, gleams white in the sunshine, a visually striking feature of the city's design.
The Romanesque-Gothic architecture of the Siena Cathedral features carvings of gargoyles and saints and a stunning mosaic of the Coronation of the Virgin. The inside is just as alluring as the exterior: an ornate mosaic floor and awe-inspiring pulpit make it one of Italy's most beautiful churches.
