Private Salerno & Paestum
Leaving from the cruise ship terminal in Naples, this private tour will take you on a knowledge lovers tour of Salerno and Paestum.
Sandwiched between the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno, the Sorrentine peninsula is a uniquely beautiful stretch of land in Italy, with soaring hills and yawning valleys. Terraces of colourful towns with fragrant citrus gardens have been built onto hillsides, with olive groves and winding vineyards adding lushness to the countryside. You'll drive through the peninsula's photogenic landscape on the way to Salerno, which sits on the gulf of the same name that opens up to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Sometimes underrated next to its more colorful companion cities on the Amalfi Coast, Salerno is a relaxed town that offers an authentic Italian experience. There you'll find the Schola Medica Salernitana, the first medical school not only in Italy but in the world. And in the famed Cathedral of Salerno, you'll find the tomb of Saint Matthew the Evangelist, one of the Twelve Apostles.
The coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea will only get more interesting when you reach Paestum, which is a 60 km (37 miles) drive from Salerno. There you will find three beautifully preserved ancient Greek temples that date back as far as 600 BC. Along with the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Poseidon, and the Temple of Athena, Paestum is also known for its painted tombs, which feature remarkable colourful frescoes.
To accommodate any changes in weather, we recommend lightweight summer clothing and light layers on this Naples cruise excursion, with sweaters and jackets advised for evenings and cooler months. The terrain in Italy can be very uneven, and archaeological sites can prove to be especially challenging for those who are not surefooted, so keep that in mind when booking your tour. Vehicles are accessible for a foldable wheelchair or walker.
