Private Portofino and Santa Margherita Highlights Tour with Driver
Departing from the Port of Genoa, this private day tour takes you through the historic coastal villages of Portofino, Santa Margherita, and Camogli, where you'll discover the stunning art, architecture, history, and cuisine of these ancient Ligurian harbors.
On the morning of your tour, your personal driver will pick you up from the Port of Genoa in a private vehicle to start your sightseeing trek along the stunning coast of the Ligurian Sea and the Italian Riviera. In the summer months (usually from April to October) when the weather is good, you'll arrive at the harbor of Santa Margherita, where you will board a ferry. Head out into the crystal blue waters and skirt the rocky coastline as you take in the dramatic views of cliffside fishing villages, stepped vineyards and orchards, and quaint inlet beaches. In the winter months (usually November to March), your driver will take you straight to Portofino.
Cross the narrow passage that connects the sea to the secluded cove of Portofino. Wooden fishing boats and brightly colored tall houses ring the basin, all surrounded by groves of olive and chestnut trees perched high above on the cliffs. Among the most ancient of villages along this stretch of coast, Portofino's origins date back to the Roman Empire. Spend the rest of your morning strolling the quaint blocks and alleyways, and touring the hamlet's historic sites. Marvel at the view from Castello Brown, a 10th-century castle overlooking the sea, once used for harbor defense against invading bands of pirates. From there, venture to the most ancient part of the village and the Church of St. Martin (Chiesa Divo Martino), originally constructed during the decline of the Roman Empire. The small church is home to the relics of saint martyrs Dorotea, Cassiano, and Vincenzo. Wander over to the Church of St. George (Chisea di San Giorgio), which is situated at the edge of a stunning promontory overhanging the bay. Since it was built in the 12th century, the church has been destroyed and restored four times, most recently during World War II. It is home to a small collection of Italian paintings, preserved masterpieces from centuries past.
In summer, climb back aboard the ferry for the scenic trip back to Santa Margherita. In winter, your driver will take you to Santa Margherita directly, where you will be able to purchase lunch at one of the town's many delectable trattorias. Sample the best of the local cuisine, including the world renowned focaccia bread, fresh pesto, and the most amazing local seafood. After lunch, meet your driver for the short trip along the breathtaking La Ruta, a roadway built along the ridge that divides the two main sides of the promontory of Portofino. Arrive in Camogli, a quaint Medieval village of fishermen and sailors. Lining the shore, you'll find centuries-old buildings painted in bright hues of pink, yellow, and green. Walk through the village among the fragrant wild rosemary and lavender, citrus and olive trees, under boughs of myrtle and laurel. Take your time and stroll the cobblestone streets and lush nature paths of this sleepy village, one of Italy's best kept secrets. After you've had the opportunity to shop, relax, and sightsee, meet your personal driver for the trip back to the Port of Genoa along the breathtaking coastal road.
