Private Excursion to the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii
Departing from the cruise ship terminal in Naples, this private Pompeii tour will take you on a winding journey through the history of Pompeii and on the roads along the stunning Amalfi Coast. A driver will chauffeur you and your companions between sightseeing locations as you enjoy the comfort and convenience of your own private sedan or van. It's a luxurious way to see the beauty of Italy.
You'll start this tour from Naples in the morning, heading for Pompeii. In the modern city, there is the Vesuvian Museum, which documents the history of Mount Vesuvius, its eruptions and the history of the area. You'll also find the historic Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary Basilica, which stands next to a soaring granite bell tower that boasts views of not only the volcano, but the Lattari Mountains and the Sorrento coastline.
In the modern city of Pompeii, you will find the preserved ancient city of Pompeii, an archaeological and cultural treasure where the ghosts and echoes of history can still be seen and heard in the ruins of the ancient Roman city. You can wander 2000-year-old roads and glimpse into the temples and villas of the ancient city. You will see everything from colorful, lively frescoes and mosaics to the ghostly, white stone people of the city, frozen in time forever. You'll have three hours to explore the history and culture of Italy in Pompeii before breaking for lunch.
After a lunch break, you will then hit the Coast Road, which wraps itself around the coastline offering vistas that blur into the distant horizon and precarious views to the crashing waves below. Your views to the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida will make for beautiful photographs, as will the mythical vista of Mount Vesuvius.
You'll stop in Sorrento, famous for its lemons and a liqueur made from them called limoncello. The cliffs and the narrow roads that curve around and through them make for beautiful photos, as do the Marina Grande and Marina Piccolo, two ports that offer beautiful sea views.
Take joy in the continued beauty of the panoramic views of the coast as you pass through Praiano on your way to Amalfi where colorful tiers of houses blend into tree-dappled cliffs that climb into the clouds. This city is dramatic in its beauty, sitting at the mouth of a ravine, almost plunging into the sea. The heart of the city is the Piazza Duomo where Saint Andrew's Cathedral with its Romanesque bell tower and brightly mosaiced Byzantine towers sis gleaming at the top of a staircase.
From Amalfi, you will travel through the Dragon's Valley, up to the hilltop town of Ravello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Check out the view from Villa Rufolo, which looks out over the bright blue sea, or visit the delightful and romantic Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone.
Lightweight summer clothing and light layers are recommended, with sweaters and jackets advised for evenings and cooler months. Some terrain in Italy is uneven and archaeological sites can be challenging for those who are not surefooted, so keep that in mind when booking your tour. Vehicles are accessible for a folding wheelchair or walker.
