Private Treasures of Naples and Pizza Tasting
Go Pizza Tasting on this Private Tour of Naples
For this Naples port trip, you will meet your transportation on the pier and drive to the heart of historic Naples.
A walking tour will take you through the medieval streets to the heart of the historic city, the district of San Gregorio. With the San Gregorio Armeno Cathedral as its center point, the district was traditionally home to Naple's artists, artisans and Medieval guilds. The Cathedral, largely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in the 15th century, is one of the most important Baroque complexes in Naples. It boasts Perugino's painting of the Assumption, Gothic crypts including the tomb of Pope Innocence IV, masterpieces of Baroque painting and the truly extraordinary Treasury of San Gennaro Museum.
The museum is housed in a chapel adorned with frescoes by Giordano. The museum exhibits masterworks from the San Gennaro Treasury. The truly astonishing Treasury is a repository that includes paintings, illuminated manuscripts, jewelry, and precious liturgical objects in gold and silver donated to the cathedral over the course of nine centuries by Popes, kings, nobles and notables.
When in Naples, you should experience something many locals would consider a masterwork, a real Neapolitan pizza in the city of its birth. Pizza was invented in Naples in 1830. Sample the real deal at a pizzeria, where the traditional thin-crust pie is baked in a high-temperature wood-burning oven. You will then return to the pier.
Please Note: Guests can choose to stay in the San Gregorio area at the end of their program and experience another truly Italian treat, although not exclusive to Naples. The Via San Gregorio Armeno is lined on both sides with little artesian workshops that create the nativity scenes (presepe in Italian) and terra cotta figures that go with them. As this is a deviation to the tour program, guests would be responsible for their return to the pier which would be at their own expense.
