Highlights of Limon City

You won't want to miss this unforgettable tour of Costa Rica. On these Puerto Limon coast excursions, you will learn the most important aspects of the Afro-Caribbean Culture of Costa Rica and see the rich wildlife of this fascinating region. As you travel to each location on your tour, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful Puerto Limon coastline on the scenic coastal roads.

Your tour begins with a short city tour. History records that in 1502, Christopher Columbus landed in Costa Rica at the place known as Puerto Limon. Admire the architecture in the city's old quarter, the city's beautiful parks, and charming open air market.

Stretch your legs on a 45 minute nature walk at Cahuita National Park. Cahuita, whose name comes from the indigenous words "kawe" (mahogany) and "ta" (point), was created in 1970 to protect the country's largest coral reef. One hundred twenty-three species of fish have been listed here, along with a variety of corals and other invertebrates. The park also protects an example of tropical moist forest, along with swamps forest and marshland. Cahuita is a perfect place for those who want to enjoy a beautiful tropical beach, the rain forest, and abundant wildlife. Walk down a flat and shady trail that runs along the shoreline, and enjoy the rich biodiversity of the area. Monkeys, sloths, iguanas, toucans, colorful frogs, and many other species are very common to see during this tour. This is a very easy walk for all, from kids to seniors.

After your nature walk, you will visit a banana plantation, where you will hear many interesting facts about this amazing fruit and its harvesting, processing, packing, and exportation. Costa Rica is the second-largest banana producer in the world; 80% of the plantations are located in Limon province, making it one of the most important economic activities in the region. All in all, it's a truly interesting cultural experience that you can't miss.

Your tour continues with a boat ride on the Tortuguero Canals. Board your covered boat for a 60-minute leisurely cruise through the jungle canals. Learn about the rainforest ecosystem from your knowledgeable guide, who will point out interesting sights along the way. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, aquatic birds, bats, and crocodiles, as well as exotic flora.

During your Limon City Highlights tour, you will enjoy browsing through different souvenir stores. The Caribbean enjoys a wondrous diversity of cultures: Afro-Costa Rican, Bribri and Cabecar, Asian, Italian, and Central American, among others. Besides food, the region features a collection of cultural activities and traditions which make it unique from the rest of the country.

Please Note: The packing house and working areas at the banana plantation are restricted areas, and will not be visited on the tour. This tour takes place in a rainforest. During the rainy season (usually from September to November), please bring a raincoat. This tour operates rain or shine.

Great day in Limon!
Awesome small group shore excursion at a great price. Better than offered by cruise line. Our guide was efficient and informative. Driver and guide were excellent at spotting wildlife. We saw several sloths, howler monkeys, Costa Rican raccoon, birds, snake, butterflies. Guide was knowledgeable in flora and fauna, and the banana farm was interesting too. Even had a little time to shop and get some Costa Rican coffee.

Beautiful tour of the sights and rain forest.
This was a fun excursion. We enjoyed our driver (Gato) and guide (Walker). Gato was a good driver and very cautious. Walker explained life in Costa Rica as we traveled to the rain forest. On the way we stopped for bananas and pulled over to see monkeys in the trees. The rain forest was beautiful and again we saw more monkeys and wild animals.
On the way out we spotted some sloths in the trees. The ride along the river was fun as well.

Costa Rica’s natural beauty
Went to National park Rain forest and saw a lot of wildlife, visited and learned about banana harvesting as well as other local plants. This tour showed Costa Rica’s natural and tropical beauty and would recommend it. We do wish our tour guide used a microphone to amplify his voice because he was hard to hear from the back as group was spreading apart.

Explore Costa Rica with a Proud Local
We took the Highlights of Limon tour in Costa Rica and were totally satisfied. The guide, Carlos, was informative and fun. He's an interesting character who knew all about his country and was happy to share. We boarded a van with around 20 people in our group. We headed directly to a boat ride. It was raining but we were always under a cover. Carlos made sure we all saw the sloths and area birds. He even assisted with photographing and made certain everyone saw. We stopped for fresh bananas from a local on our way to a nature preserve that featured monkeys, clothes and many interesting birds. Our final stop was a banana plantation. Carlos showed us immature bananas and explained the process with great detail. I recommend this tour to anyone who wants to sample costa rica with a local.

The description and coverage of where we went was great. The sites are very good and the tour guide was excellent. The problem was I got on a bus was able to get a seat right at the window. Just before we left that was asked to leave that bus because I was a single traveler and go on to another bus. I ended up sitting in a seat with absolutely no View. I don't understand why I had to get off one bus when the person who was getting on the bus who took my seat was late getting to the tour and I was there early enough to make sure I got a good seat. I ended up getting a terrible seat on the next bus.
