Eco Tour and Snorkel

The emphasis of this Antigua Eco Tour and Snorkel is on the ecology and history of the area. The warm, clear waters, protected by over twenty little islands, countless reefs, flats and mangrove nurseries are always calm, and there are perfect opportunities for spotting some of the local residents, including turtles, frigate birds, herons, pelicans, spotted eagle rays, sting rays, barracuda, ospreys, turns, noddies, laughing gulls, and the beautiful tropic birds. The crew will talk about local flora and fauna and the interesting scientific turtle project at Jumby Bay, and guests will be entertained by their anecdotes and stories of local history and folklore.

After picking you up from St. Johns, you will spend approximately one hour on the boat with a talk of Long Island (turtle project), Maiden Island (reef ball system), and Guiana Island (mangrove system). Then you'll head to Bird Island, there is a short snorkeling lesson for those who are not up to date with their snorkeling. All equipment is supplied, and crew members will accompany both guided snorkeling sessions after lunch. You'll then head out into the bay of the island and spend the next 40 minutes enjoying a local lunch, usually featuring BBQ chicken, green salad, pasta w/olive oil and garlic, plantain (a type of banana that you cook); and for dessert, there is the most delicious banana bread. We also have passion fruit juice, tamarind juice (tastes like iced tea with apple juice), diet coke, coke, and water.

After lunch, we head to Hell's Gate Island, where you have a choice to either go snorkeling or swim ashore to the island (short swim) and do a walk through the small cave that runs through the island, and then walk over the natural bridge that connects two small parts of the island. Time on the island lasts between 30-40 minutes. After the Hell's Gate experience is finished, head back to a reef off Bird Island, where you can go snorkeling again, or if you simply want to relax, there is plenty of shade on the boat and of course, easy ladders for those of you who fancy a refreshing dip for approximately 30 minutes. After this last snorkeling session, we head slowly back to St. John, into the setting sun, while the crew's "secret recipe" rum punch makes a perfect end to a perfect day.

The boat itself is extremely spacious and comfortable and has a freshwater shower and a restroom. The number of guests on the tour is deliberately kept low to enhance the feeling of luxury. You will leave this tour feeling that you have been welcomed into a very special community of the most privileged visitors to Antigua and Barbuda: those who have had a taste of what it really means to have grown up in the islands and have been let into the "secrets of the North Sound."

Beautiful snorkel spots & great tour guides
Great tour— beautiful snorkeling spots- wish we had more time at the third stop. Guides gave us lots of info and facts about the area and turtles. They didn’t make us snorkel as a group and were super chill, treating us like adults, unlike other tour companies. We picked up people from three hotels along the beach and at the cruise port. Would definitely do this excursion again. Lunch was bbq chicken, pasta salad, salad, fried plantains with banana bread for dessert. Thoroughly enjoyed it and got to see several turtles.

More than just an eco tour & snorkel!!!
Small group is the best way to experience these tours, only 8 of us on this tour which took most of the day. Despite the few minutes of steady down pour, we had an amazing tour to the turtle sanctuary, three snorkeling trips as well as climbing on a limestone island / cave

Great staff and snorkeling
Friendly staff and a great way to see St Johns. We stopped at a couple of places to snorkel. The snorkeling was quite good with lots of beautiful fan corral and fish. There was also a lot of good information about the ecology around the island. Lunch was great on the boat. There were about 20 people with us but it did feel crowded on the boat.

We had such a fun time on this excursion. We were shown around the island and given lots of knowledgeable information from our tour guides. Then taken to a cave and a private snorkel beach. We stopped and had a great home cooked lunch. We would refer this tour to all. lots of fun and entertaining. Tom and Kathy

Great times and Beautiful Sights
We took the Antigua Eco Tour and Snorkel off of the Grandeur of the Seas. There were only 17 people on the tour compared to the normal ship tours which pack 40 to 50 people on a boat (there were only 3 people from the Grandeur on the tour...the others were staying locally). It is a joy to be on a small group tour and our boat was very spacious and comfortable. The sites are absolutely stunning and the crew is very accommodating. They are also very conscious of getting you back to the ship on time. The boat stops at Hell's Gate and you can elect to snorkel, swim, or hike here. The "hike" is actually just a climb up to the top of the rocks. It is a bit challenging but reef shoes are provided and it is worth the effort. Absoluting fanstastic. Lunch is provided and you are on an isolated beach all to yourself. Throughout the tour, you are given information about the wildlife. The final snorkel at a reef is very nice. There is no better way to spend a day then with this tour.
