The short lived Klondike Gold Rush at the turn of hte century put Haines on the map. Up until this time, there was a mission by the name of Haines. With the rumor of gold, the population of the area reached 30,000. as the town became a supply center, as the nearby Dalton Trail offered a route to the Yukon for prospectors. Gold was also discovered in the Porcupine District whose closest supply center was Haines. With the completion of the White Pass railroad in 1900, Haines importance quickly diminished. Today, the yearly residents number just over 2000, and fishing, some lumbering and tourism are the main sources of income.
