5 Things to Do in Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is located on the north coast of Jamaica and is rumored to be the first landing spot of Columbus. The town is mostly a tourism destination now with a large portion of those visitors coming on cruise ships. As for the town’s name, it is Spanish for “Eight Rivers.” Though the area doesn’t really have eight rivers, it does have the famous Dunn’s River Falls. And that’s just one of the 5 things you should do on your next trip to this Jamaican paradise.

Dunn’s River Falls

One of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean and probably one of the most photographed, these waterfalls flow almost 600 feet long and flow directly into the Caribbean Sea.

You can climb this natural wonder in about an hour or hour and a half (usually with the assistance of a local guide). After successfully climbing these amazing falls, you can spend the rest of the day relaxing in one of the lagoons or pools alongside the falls. If you’re doing the falls on your own, there are locker rental facilities available.

Tubing

Even though it doesn’t have those eight rivers its name suggests, Ocho Rios does have four rivers in the area, and that means there are some great tubing excursions available. Most tubing takes place on the White River. While tubing on the White River, you can slow down, stop and enjoy a swim break, or jump off a rope swing or two.  Or you can just sit back and relax with a local Jamaican beer in your hand. You can book this privately through local tours or through your cruise ship.

Bob Marley Tour

Bob Marley might be the most famous Jamaican export ever. His legacy and music live on today all over the world. When you visit Ocho Rios, you can visit the areas where Bob Marley grew up (a quiet village about an hour and a half from Ocho Rios called Nine Mile), lived and even his final resting place. It’s just not the sights; you’ll meet people who grew up with the music legend. This is a must-do for any true Bob Marley fan.

Horseback Riding

Whether you’re an experienced rider or you’ve never ridden a horse before, this excursion offers amazing sights and adventure. Local stables will pair you with a horse that matches your experience, and then you’re off to ride by sugar cane fields and the sand and sea of the island. As if that’s not enough, you’ll get the chance to ride your horse into the sea for an unforgettable experience. This is another tour available through your ship directly or a private booking.

Whitewater Rafting

If you’re seeking adventure in Ocho Rios, look no further than this excursion. The Rio Bueno River offers exhilarating and exciting rapids. You’ll be able to experience the rapids and even a break mid-way down to do some swimming. You’ll even get to go over a small waterfall. This excursion is usually booked privately, and there are several local operators who offer this adventure.
