Cahuita National Park, Costa Rica, is located only 60 minutes from the cruise pier on the Caribbean side of the country. The name Cahuita is from the indigenous language - kawe, meaning mahogany, and ta, which means point.
The park was created in 1970 to protect the country's largest coral reef. One hundred and twenty-three species of fish have been listed here, along with a variety of corals and other invertebrates. The park also protects an example of tropical forest, along with swamps and marshland. Cahuita is a perfect place for those who want to enjoy the sun, the sand and a beach in the Caribbean Sea.
Upon arrival to Cahuita Town, you will set out on a nature walk and enjoy the rich biodiversity of the area, along a flat and shady trail that runs along the shoreline. Monkeys, iguanas, birds, cayman and many other species are very common to see during this tour. Changing rooms, showers, and toilets are available at the entrance to the park. There are also places to grab a snack or a quick lunch at your own expense. Time at the park is approximately one hour.
On the return drive to Puerto Limón, your group will visit a banana plantation and packing house. Here you will learn about the interesting life of this amazing fruit, from planting to your breakfast table. You will hear about the crop and its harvesting, processing, packing and exportation. Costa Rica is the second-largest banana producer in the world; 80% of the plantations are located in Limón province, making it one of the most important economic activities in the region.
Please note: On Saturdays, workers usually do not work in the packing house. On Sundays, the packing house is closed. On these days, your guide will give you an overview of the packing process only. Vehicles available for this tour accommodate groups of up to 6, 16, or 50 passengers maximum. Groups with more than 30 guests may be accommodated upon request. Please take this information into consideration when booking.
