Haleakala Sunset
Haleakala Sunset
Your Maui Haleakala Volcano Sunset excursion begins with a once-in-a-lifetime trip through upcountry Maui on your way to the Haleakala Volcano. Take in the sights of the sugarcaned plains and protea farms of Kula, as you travel beyond the tree line to where cacti and rare Hawaiian silver swords grow right up to the volcano's crest.
Haleakala is an active, but not currently erupting volcano. If that sounds ominous, you can take comfort in the fact that its last eruption occurred more than 200 years ago, in 1790. One of the world's most spectacular views is from the 10,023-foot summit, where you can marvel at all of Maui below. From this magical vantage point, watch the glorious sunset dramatically coloring the end of the day.
Haleakala's crater itself is 3,000 feet deep, 7.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. Many cinder cones rise from the crater's floor, the tallest being Pu'u o Maui, measuring 500 feet tall.
